Ariana Grande appears to sing about her grief over ex-boyfriend Mac Miller in a cut from her new album Thank U, Next.
In September last year, Ariana was left heartbroken by the loss of her former love, when it was announced that Mac had died at the age of 26, just months after their split.
Shortly after his death, the singer announced that she’d ended her engagement to Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson, with this time in her life seeming to have inspired the song Ghostin.
Released on Friday morning, Ghostin opens with Ariana singing about trying to “hold in” her tears when she’s in bed with an unspecified partner.
“You been so understanding, you been so good,” she sings. “And I’m puttin’ you through more than one ever should.
“And I’m hating myself ’cause you don’t want to admit that it hurts you.
“I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again... over him.”
In the second verse, she admits: “Though I wish he were here instead, don’t want that living in your head. He just comes to visit me, when I’m dreaming every now and then.”
In a post-chorus section, she remains hopeful, as she’s heard singing: “We’ll get through this, we’ll get past this, I’m a girl with a whole lot of baggage.”
Last month, when asked by a fan what Ghostin was about, Ariana tweeted: “Feeling badly for the person you’re with bc you love somebody else. Feeling badly bc he can tell he can’t compare... and how i should be ghosting him.”
Many fans have also pointed out that the song appears to sample Mac Miller’s song titled 2009, which featured on his final album, Swimming.
It was previously suspected that Ariana would be covering the Mac Miller song Remember on Thank U, Next, after a track with that title appeared in a teaser featured in her Breathin music video.
However, it was later reported this supposed tribute had been scrapped, and replaced by the more light-hearted Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored.
Ariana previously name-checked both Mac Miller and Pete Davidson in the album’s title track, which sees her reflecting on the lessons she’s learned from her past relationships.
