A pregnant woman stuck in traffic en route to hospital ended up giving birth in the back of a police car.

The unnamed woman and her husband were on their way to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading when they ground to a halt in traffic just five minutes away from their destination.

With the baby unmistakably on the way, the dad-to-be used his initiative and flagged down a nearby police car.

Obliging officers were happy to help, given the circumstances, and turned on the blue lights and siren.

Dodging around the crawling traffic, they were able to race the woman to the hospital, while her husband followed on in the family car.

Despite their speedy response, however, when hospital staff came out to meet the police car, they discovered that they were too late - the baby girl had already said 'evenin', all' to the world during the five minute journey.

We wonder if the new mum has picked out a name for the little girl yet? If not, we reckon Bobbie would be just the job!

Thames Valley Police paid tribute to the PCs who came to the woman's aid via their Twitter account for Reading.

'A baby was born in one of our police cars today as PCs Ian Sullivan, Holly Galvin and George Wigley helped a woman on her way to hospital,' read the tweet.

While users praised the officers' quick reactions, one couldn't resist joking that he hoped it would be the young lady's last ride in a police car.

It's not the first time police have been on hand to come to the rescue of a pregnant woman (although the popular belief that officers are obliged to let a mum-to-be relieve herself in their helmet is apparently only an urban legend).

This summer, police in Portsmouth pulled over a car doing 100mph on the motorway, only to discover a woman in labour on the back seat. Officers were quick to lend a hand - and they even let the family off a speeding ticket!
