A baby has been shot dead in New York as his parents pushed him in his stroller.

The Evening Standard reports that 16-month-old Antiq Hennis was hit in the head with a bullet after gunmen open fire on a Brooklyn street.

The baby died at 2am this morning, despite frantic efforts by medics at Brookdale University hospital to save him.

The police are currently investigating reports that Antiq's dad, Anthony, was the killer's intended target. He escaped injury by fleeing the scene.

Eye witness accounts claim he then returned to the street to find his little boy in a pool of blood.

Gina Gamboa, 22, told the paper: "The father was screaming his baby got shot. He was going crazy. The baby was breathing, but his eyes were closed."

Anthony and the baby's mum Cherise were just a block from their home when the attack took place.

Two young men are reported to have been brandishing guns, with at least four shots fired.

Local preacher Bishop Willie Billips went with Antiq's mum and dad to formally identify the baby after his death.

"I'm furious about what I've just seen. I'm outraged...a one-year-old baby lying on the bed," he said. "It's horrible and it brought me to tears,to see young parents suffer - for what?"

Antiq's uncle Chris Dovsen said the little boy was 'vibrant and full of energy' and had just learned to walk.

He is the 16th victim under the age of 16 to be shot on New York's streets over the summer.

CBS report that community activist Tony Herbert begged the killer to turn himself in. "They're making phone calls right, and that shooter guaranteed your name has been picked up at the Police Department, so turn yourself in," he said.
