A baby born with drug addiction and withdrawal symptoms should go into foster care pending decisions about her long-term future, a family court judge has ruled.

The baby girl’s mother had been worried about smoking when pregnant but was not concerned about the impact her use of heroin and crack cocaine would have, Judge Sarah Davies heard.

She had also stopped taking a heroin substitute when pregnant.

Specialists said the woman had shown no “insight”.

Detail of the case has emerged in a written ruling published by the judge following a private family court hearing in Canterbury, Kent.

Judge Davies did not identify the woman and baby involved but said social services bosses and Kent County Council had launched family court litigation.
