Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and My Week with Marilyn are set to go head to head at this year's Baftas, with both films picking up an impressive 16 nods.
The news comes as a welcome reward for Tinker Tailor, starring Tom Hardy, Colin Firth and Gary Oldman, after it was excluded from the Golden Globe and SAG nominations in the US.
In second place, Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady and silent flick The Artist - hotly tipped for an Oscar - have picked up 13 nods each, while Martin Scorsese's Hugo and The Help received 12.
Missing out on any Bafta recognition in a major category was Terrence Malick's epic reflection on love and loss, The Tree Of Life. Also overlooked was Steve McQueen's Shame, which failed to make it into the Best Film category - despite receiving great reviews for its depiction of sex-addiction, self-harm and other thrills in New York.
Motor racing documentary Senna, which took a victory lap at the box office, has done better out of the UK awards system than it did in the States, where it was overlooked for an Oscar documentary nomination. It's now in the running for Outstanding British Film of the Year, alongside the likes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, We Need To Talk About Kevin and War Horse.
