Barbie and Lego may be more than 50 years old but they've fought off competition from more modern toys to be named the toy brands most loved by children around the world.

Playmobil, Mickey Mouse and My Little Pony also proved to be ever popular in a recent online poll of more than 30,000 children aged under 15.

Lego is celebrating it's 65th birthday, while Barbie has also reached the grand old age of 55, proving that oldies really are goodies.

There are marked differences between the toy brands voted for boys and those favoured by girls.

It seems girls are more likely to show a preference for gendered toys (at least when asked about their favourite toys by researchers), with Barbie and Hello Kitty topping the girls' list.

However gender-neutral Lego was the third most popular toy for girls, coming in three places above the Lego Friends range, which is marketed for girls.

Around 80 per cent of the top 10 girls' toy brands revolve around a character. This drops to 60 per cent among boys.

Here are the top 10 most popular toy brands as voted for by boys and girls in the study carried out by Kidz Global on behalf of the Licensing Industry Merchandisers' Association:
