Beyoncé has spoken out for the first time about the devastating miscarriage she suffered two years ago.

The singer had picked out names and heard the heartbeat of her baby, but was told the heartbreaking news she has miscarried when she went for a check up.

In her new documentary, Life is But a Dream, Beyoncé opens up about the pregnancy.

"About two years ago, I was pregnant for the first time," she says. "And I heard the heartbeat, which was the most beautiful music I ever heard in my life. I picked out names. I envisioned what my child would look like... I was feeling very maternal.

"I flew back to New York to get my check up – and no heartbeat. Literally the week before, I went to the doctor, everything was fine, but there was no heartbeat."

The star reveals that she dealt with her grief by focusing on her music, and putting all her emotions into her work.

"I went into the studio and wrote the saddest song I've ever written in my life," she says. "And it was actually the first song I wrote for my (last) album. And it was the best form of therapy for me, because it was the saddest thing I've ever been through."

Beyoncé added that when she discovered she was pregnant with Blue it was like falling in love all over again.

"Being pregnant (with Blue Ivy) was very much like falling in love. You are so open. You are so overjoyed. There's no words that can express having a baby growing inside of you," she said.

Her husband, Jay-Z, released a song last year after the birth of their daughter Blue Ivy which suggested they had previously lost a baby.

'Glory' contained lyrics such as 'last time the miscarriage was so tragic, we was afraid you disappeared' and 'all the pain of the last time, I prayed so hard it was the last time. Your mama said that you danced for her, did you wiggle your hands for her?'

Beyoncé's documentary airs on US channel HBO later this month.
