A man has been shot and injured by police during a dawn raid in which six people were arrested for firearms offences.

Officers forced entry to the property in Shepherds Gardens, Edgbaston, Birmingham, at about 5am on Tuesday, West Midlands Police said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said a man, in his 30s, was hit by a single shot during the raid.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in the city with an arm injury which is not believed to be life-threatening.

Four men, aged 21, 35, 45 and 52, and two women, aged 59 and 64, were arrested during the pre-planned operation, in which they were searching for a man in connection with firearm offences outside a block of flats.

A firearm was recovered from the scene and was seized for forensic examination.

The six arrested, all from Birmingham, remain in police custody, police said.

The incident has been referred to the IOPC and police said inquiries were at an early stage.

The arrests are not connected to the Conservative Party conference, which is taking place in the city, the force added.

A spokesman for the IOPC said: “After West Midlands Police notified us we sent investigators to the scene of the shooting, and the police post incident procedure.

“We have gathered police body-worn video which will be reviewed, and witness accounts are being provided by the officers involved.

“Our investigators remain at the scene today searching for any available CCTV footage and carrying out house to house inquiries, which are expected to continue as the week progresses.”

He added: “They are also overseeing police forensic examinations which have included recovery of a non-police issue firearm.”

IOPC regional director for the West Midlands, Derrick Campbell, said: “This is a serious incident and as is appropriate when police use potentially lethal force we will be carrying out a thorough, independent investigation.

“We will be making contact with the family of the man who was shot and they will be regularly updated on our investigation’s progress.”
