A man has been arrested under the Terrorism Act after a bomb was found in the border town of Strabane, County Tyrone.

Police have confirmed that a suspicious object found in the Church View area of the town was an improvised explosive device (IED).

The Belfast Telegraph reported yesterday that the device had been found ‘behind the police station’.

The man was arrested in the early hours of this morning, after a number of houses were evacuated and streets cordoned off in order to deal with the device.

In a statement on its Facebook page, PSNI Strabane addressed nearby residents who had been impacted by the incident, stating: “Thank you for your support and understanding during the operation itself.

“To those affected by the inconvenience of having to be asked to leave your homes etc we can only apologise.”
