A 12-year-old boy was quizzed by the police after he allegedly 'bullied' another boy during a playground incident involving an elastic band.
The unnamed child's mum said the schoolboy was left humiliated and in tears after officers visited their home on Saturday evening.
The Mail reports two officers turned up at the family home in Leicestershire saying they were investigating an allegation that the child had 'flicked a rubber band at another pupil in the school playground'.
The mum – who the paper identifies only as 'Angela' said the officers demanded to see her son and asked him: "Do you know why we are here?".
She says they then told him off about his unacceptable 'bullying'.
"I am very angry. I just want to know why the police were investigating a 12-year-old boy on a Saturday evening," she said, adding that her son had been left 'completely bemused and absolutely terrified'.
"They said they were there because his actions were bullying. He burst into tears as soon as they left," she said, explaining that the playground tiff had already been dealt with by the school.
The events unfolded when a rubber band attached to the toggle of a coat had accidentally shot out of the boy's hand as he was playing with it. It hit an 11-year-old pupil in the face, and both children were spoken to by teachers.
"My son had told me the school had sorted it out. I didn't think it was a big deal, it was an accident, he was playing with it, it flicked out of his hand and accidentally hit the boy," Angela said. "He apologised straight away to the boy and thought that was the end of it."
She said she could not believe the police had now become involved.
"I just can't believe they would even investigate it and I've lost all my faith in them now. I've gone to them in the past for things which were much worse and they just ignored me. Now they've chosen to waste time and money on sending two officers out to this. I am horrified they would waste resources on it all."
The school said they had not involved police, and officers confirmed they had been contacted by the other child's parents.
"The mother of an 11 year-old boy reported that her son had been flicked in the face with a rubber band by another child," a police spokesman said. "Officers attended both families and advice was given. No crime was committed and therefore no investigation was launched."
