Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro has come under fire for tweeting about golden showers twice in 24 hours.
The politician posted a sexually-explicit video of one man urinating on another at the world-famous Sao Paulo carnival on Tuesday.
The leader – who is reported to have once said he was “proud to be homophobic” – said that while he did not feel comfortable sharing the video clip: “We have to expose the truth to the population”.
“This is what has become of many street blocks in the Brazilian carnival,” he wrote.
Bolsonaro, who entered office in January, later tweeted the phrase: “O que é golden shower?” to his 3.5 million followers – which translates as “What is a golden shower?”
Critics slammed the president’s comments as an attempt to hit back at the condemnation he received from revellers at carnival.
Many used the street party as an opportunity to protest against the 63-year-old, who is also considered a racist and a misogynist by many in his country.
Humberto Costa, a politician for Brazil’s Workers Party, slammed Bolsonaro as “pathetic”, saying the whole of Brazil was against him.
“The carnival showed it,” he wrote on Twitter. Your effort to lessen your rejection is useless. We are resistance!”
“Where is the decorum and respect?” Socialism and Liberty Party politician Mônica Francisco added.
Meanwhile, human rights activist Antonio Carlos Costa called on the president to apologise to the nation.
Bolsonaro was elected in October following a deeply-divisive election in Brazil.
The former army captain has been dubbed the ‘Trump of the Tropics’, with the US president among the first world leaders to congratulate Bolsonaro on his victory.
