Tory councillor and former chairman of the London Fire Authority has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
Barnet's Brian Coleman was detained on Thursday evening after reports of an altercation with cafe owner Helen Michael, who allegedly filmed him violating parking rules.
Mrs Michael alleged in London's Evening Standard: “I saw him pull up in the loading bay which I thought was outrageous given that he was involved in bringing in parking restrictions here.
“I got my phone and starting filming. He said ‘you can’t film me, give me the camera’. He then tried to grab my phone. An undercover policeman who was in the road ran to help me."
Coleman was one of the most well-known Conservative politicians to lose his London Assembly seat in last May's London elections.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “A 51-year-old-man was arrested in relation to an alleged common assault and taken to a central London police station.
“He has been released on bail to attend a north London police station [in] late October pending further enquiries.“An investigation is ongoing.”
