British Grand Prix 2014: Red Bulls Top Times After Wet Final Practice

Surely Some Mistake? Red Bulls On Top At British GP
|

For the first time this season, there was the unusual sight of two Red Bulls at the top of the timing sheets after final practice before qualifying for the British Grand Prix - but don't read too much into that as the session was punctuated with showers.

After the heat and sunshine of Friday, Formula 1 teams and fans awoke to a cool and wet Silverstone as heavy overnight rain produced a practice session with little meaning as qualifying later on Saturday was expected to be dry. As a result, some of the leading contenders didn't bother setting any flying lap times, most notably Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso who had all filled the top three places after Friday's two practices.

However, the gloomy conditions brought some rays of sunshine for Red Bull as Sebastian Vettel finished at the top of a practice session for the first time this year in spite of only completing six laps. The world champion registered a 1m52.522 best lap time with his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo just 0.109s behind while Lotus' Pastor Maldonado was third, another 0.5s adrift.

Unsurprisingly, the tricky track conditions caught a few of the drivers out; Romain Grosjean spun his Lotus on the exit of Club Corner and just before the pits straight which brought great cheers from the fans in packed grandstands. No damage done though and he was able to continue and he ended the 60 minutes in fourth.

Adrian Sutil nearly came a cropper in his Sauber at Stowe but Jules Bianchi wasn't so lucky, sliding straight on instead of turning right and ending up in the barriers.

His accident brought an end to Marussia's difficult practice session; home driver Max Chilton had already failed to set a time after withdrawing from the session after just one lap because of gearbox problems with his MR03. He will more than likely start the race in last place after being docked five places for the gearbox change.

Toro Rosso's Daniel Kvyat gained most from the morning, completing 15 laps and setting his fastest time - 1m53.654 - on his penultimate run.

Meanwhile, the third British driver, Jenson Button finished eighth, one place behind his McLaren team-mate Kevin Magnussen, who once again held the upper hand over his more experienced partner.
