A British tourist has died on the Greek island of Zante following a parachuting accident, it has been reported.

The Foreign Office has named the man as Jake Simkins and said it was "providing consular support to his family".

Mr Simkins, reported to be 42 and holidaying with his girlfriend who is seven-months pregnant, died on Friday 8 June after crashing into a cliff face on the island, the BBC said.

Local police told the broadcaster that Mr Simkins had been base jumping with a parachute when it became stuck on a cliff above Navagio beach in north-west Zante before crashing into the rock face.

Siats Sotiros, a local police officer, said that Mr Simkins was stuck on the rocks for three hours while emergency services tried to rescue him, before falling to his death.

Corne van der Eerden, a Dutch tourist who witnessed the incident, told the BBC:

"I shouted out to him and he said he thought he had broken his leg. He said he had his mobile phone on him and was going to call his wife.

"I told him to be careful but he said he was going to hang on tight. Our boat arrived then, so my wife and I had to leave." He was later informed that the man had died.
