The 'Slave 4 U' superstar gave a masterclass in how to open an awards ceremony.

Britney Spears kicked off the Billboard Music Awards in style on Sunday (22 May) night, before being presented with the Millennium Award.

Britney made her way onto the stage sporting a red, sparkly ringmaster-inspired ensemble, which was soon taken off to reveal an equally dazzling carnival-style outfit.

The hitmaker kicked off her five-minute long set with ‘Work Bitch’ and ‘Womanizer’, before straddling a giant guitar for ‘I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll’.

The medley then continued with ‘Breathe On Me, ‘I’m A Slave 4 U’ and ‘Touch Of My Hand’, before ending on ‘Toxic’.

Later in the evening, Britney was presented with the Millennium Award, which, until now, had been handed out just twice in Billboard’s history, to Beyonce and Whitney Houston.

A number of other A-listers took to the stage on night, including Madonna, who paid tribute to Prince, with a little help from Stevie Wonder.

Rihanna also gave a rousing rendition of her ‘Anti’ track ‘Love On The Brain’, while Kesha’s Bob Dylan tribute earned a standing ovation.
