The average coffee quaffing Brit spends an average of £450 a year on high-street coffees – more than they spend on their annual electricity bill – according to new research.
Britain, once synonymous with a good cuppa tea, has transformed into a coffee drinking nation, with chain coffee shops such as Costa, Nero and Starbucks popping up on every high-street corner.
But next time you’ve got your nose in a venti latte on the way to work you might want to stop and think about how much money you’re pouring away for that daily caffeine hit.
The study revealed that we spend £430million a week on 511 million cups of coffee.
The average drinker spends £452.28 a year on cappuccinos, lattes and espressos while heavy drinkers fork out as much as £2,000 a year on more than 21 cups a week.
The survey was, of course, commissioned by a coffee maker manufacturer but they do have a point. As a caffeine junkie who can't resist a coffee on the morning, or the afternoon, I'd rather give a couple of hundred pounds to VillaWare than £2,000 a year to Starbucks.
