Many comedy contemporaries and celebrity fans and friends paid their respects to Caroline on Twitter after the news broke.

Her publicist Neil Reading confirmed the sad news in a statement, which read: “Caroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.

“The BAFTA award-winning writer and comedy actor died earlier today at her home in Timperley, Greater Manchester. She was 52.

“The family ask for privacy at this very sad time.”

The BAFTA-winning comedian and writer had been battling cancer since 2014, and had made less frequent appearances narrating Channel 4 show ‘Gogglebox’ in the last few months.

She first made a name for herself starring on ‘The Fast Show’ in 1994, before going on to launch her own comedy chat show as alter-ego Mrs Merton.

She went on to write and star in one of the most successful sitcoms of all-time, ‘The Royle Family’, which aired on-and-off between 1998 and 2012.
