Germany Vs Spain

Real Madrid and Barcelona have avoided each other in the Champions League semi-finals, with the Catalans taking on Bayern Munich while Madrid face Borussia Dortmund.

In what is arguably the strongest Champions League final four lineup in years, Madrid face last year's German champions having lost and drawn against Dortmund in this year's group stages.

Bayern meanwhile play Barça for the first time since their quarter-final tie in 2009, in which they were thrashed 4-0 at the Camp Nou and drew 1-1 in the Allianz Arena.

Recently crowned German champions Bayern enjoyed the easiest passage to the semis after a 4-0 aggregate victory against Juventus. Madrid experienced a fright in Turkey but prevailed 5-3 over two legs against Galatasaray while Borussia Dortmund produced a memorable comeback with two stoppage-time goals to defeat Málaga.

Barcelona were the least convincing team, drawing 3-3 with Paris Saint-Germain but progressing through to their sixth consecutive semi-final on the away goals rule.

Despite Bayern and Borussia's strengths, the draw raises the tantalising prospect of a Clásico final. Madrid have won three of their six games with Barcelona this season, losing just once.

The draw is also testament to the quality of the Bundesliga and Primera Liga's best sides. Germany and Spain are perennial frontrunners at World Cups and European Championships in the modern era, having fought out the Euro 2008 final and the 2010 World Cup semi-final. Spain have, of course, won the last two Euros and the 2010 World Cup, with a first XI almost exclusively made up of Barça and Real players.

Germany however fell short of a Euros final reunion last summer when they were surprisingly beaten by Italy in the last four.

The final will be held at Wembley for the seventh time. Barcelona have won two of their four European Cups at the stadium, against Sampdoria in 1992 and Manchester United in 2011.
