Texas High School Cheerleaders Dance To 9/11 Attack Audio On Anniversary Of Tragedy

Cheerleaders Perform ‘Tasteless' And ‘Cringeworthy' 9/11 Routine

A group of Texas cheerleaders have come under criticism on social media after performing a routine to the soundtrack of audio from 9/11.

The video, which was posted online to mark the 14th anniversary of the tragedy, has since been viewed more than 20 million times and some people have reacted on Twitter calling it out to be ‘tasteless’ and ‘cringeworthy’.

The team who attend Lumberton High School in Texas, back-flipped and jumped to God Bless the USA before continuing to dance to clippings from early news reports and George Bush's first speech after the disaster.

You can watch the full routine video here:

Snippets included soundbites from various news reports, one stating: “Oh my god another plane has hit another building,

“Exploding into the middle of it… explosions, huge explosions. A large section of the building has blown out.”

People flocked to Twitterverse, sprouting their range of opinions on the issue:

In response to the backlash, Lauren Sheffield, the teams coach told Buzzfeed News: “We do this because we believe it is very important to honor and remember the first responders, those who gave their lives, and those who still mourn the hole left by lost loved ones."

This is not the first time that a high-school routine has come under scrutiny from the internet and earlier this month a marching band apologised after forming a "penis" at their half time show.

The procession - recorded on video footage by onlookers - spread across Twitter as users on the social network tried to decipher what the routine was supposed to represent.
