Twelve children, including two 12-year-old boys, have been charged with taking part in a football riot.

They are among 27 youths facing court after hooligans went on the rampage after Newcastle United's 3-0 defeat by local rivals Sunderland last season.

Hundreds of thugs hurled bricks and bottles at police and 49 have been charged with violent disorder.

They include two 12-year-olds, from Newcastle, three 14-year-olds, seven boys aged 15, seven 16-year-olds and eight 17-year-olds.

Det Chief Insp Ged Noble said: "We've been submitting files of evidence to the CPS and are now in a position to charge more people with violent disorder, bringing the total number of people charged in connection with the disorder to almost 50.

"Those who have been charged are subject to conditions preventing them from attending Newcastle United matches.

"They are now going through the court process. There are further files to be submitted and we anticipate further charges.

"There is no place for any kind of disorder in our communities and what happened in April is in no way reflective of true football supporters."
