A version of one of cinema's most iconic and beloved vehicles is to go on sale, as a dedicated fan's replica of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is auctioned off to the public.

The Surrey-based Bonhams auction house will sell the copy, which is a fully-operational replica of the winged automobile, although presumably flightless, on Thursday.

The sale is expected to raise a figure close to £250,000 for owner and fan of the film Gordon Grant, who built the car over the course of 12 years.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, so-named for the spluttering noises its engine made, was the star of the 1968 musical film starring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes, in which it is transformed from a wreck into a fine, floating, flying machine.
