Chris Evans has sent Marvel fans into meltdown by prompting speculation he has quit his role as Captain America

The actor, who has played the superhero for the last eight years, posted a cryptic tweet after completing filming on the fourth ‘Avengers’ movie.

“Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least,” he tweeted. 

“Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor.

“To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”

The tweet came after Chris previously hinted he would be saying goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, telling the New York Times: “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”

Needless to say, film fans are feeling pretty emotional right now...

Chris has played Captain American numerous times over the last eight years. 

He has starred in ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, as well as the upcoming untitled ‘Avengers’ film, which is due to be released next year.
