We need to stop prioritising ourselves over the environment and focus our concerns on wildlife instead of "chasing cures for cancer", Springwatch presenter Chris Packham has said.

The BBC wildlife expert said the time has come where we must "think about all life and not just human life."

In a new forthright interview with the Radio Times Packham blamed politicians, Christianity and economic growth for allowing humans to think that they can exploit the planet’s resources.

"The reason why it's failing at the moment is that politicians – local, national, global – don't understand the need to look after our planet," he said.

"If there's one mantra that we need to break in the next 10 years it's that economic growth is a good thing. It isn't. It's a recipe for global disaster."

"We need to stop chasing cures for cancer and things like that and start realising that the health of the planet goes beyond the health of human beings."

He previously claimed that population control debate was being stifled by the Holocaust, telling the Radio Times: "We have faced horrendous hurdles in getting this message across.

"The first thing is Holocaust because the minute you talk about this, people call you a eugenicist and they believe that you want to kill people.

"It's such a nonsense. It's not that there are too many whites, blacks, yellows, Muslims, Christians or anything.

"It's organisms - too many human organisms."
