If you're an atheist, why not go out and look up at the night sky towards all those tiny jewels of light twinkling from thousands of light years away and think to yourself "that's all a bit of luck then."
I'm a Christian and I'm winding you up of course. But perhaps there is something we agree on - taking the 'Christ' out of Christmas for instance. To you perhaps it smacks of dangerous superstition - me too, although perhaps for different reasons. I think a lot of what passes as religion at this time of year is just sentimental nostalgia - bland Victoriana that has no more value than swaying in time to a nursery rhyme.
After all who can disagree with a superficial message of goodwill, in the form of a baby? But Jesus the adult preached about taking personal responsibility, and then allowing God to supernaturally change a person.
Don't get me wrong, I am in favour of a party - we all need cheering up in the middle of winter. But this is like a party that someone's posted on Facebook, and now half the world has turned up without really knowing the person whose party it is.
Christmas as we have it is, at best, a truce for one day - a compromise of conflicting symbols and motivations, but lasting change cannot take place unless there is ongoing spiritual realignment with the maker of those twinkly lights millions of light years away.
