If you're planning on getting engaged this Christmas, then you're definitely not alone. In fact, there are a lot of people with the same idea.

Social media giant Facebook has revealed that Christmas Eve is the most popular time for people to get engaged.

It is closely followed by Christmas Day, New Year's Day (hello hangover) and Valentine's Day.

Analysts came to this conclusion based on 2.6 million Facebook users and their changing relationship statuses.

The findings resonate with a similar survey of 10,000 people across the UK, which revealed that 40% believe the Christmas period is the most popular time for wedding proposals - with Christmas Eve being voted the most popular day of the year to get down on one knee.

The survey by Chillisauce.co.uk also revealed that men and women have differing views on when is the right time to propose.

One third of men (33%) believe Christmas Eve would be the best time to propose, however 29% of women would prefer their partner to propose to them on Valentine’s Day.

Meanwhile one fifth of female participants (20%) hope to get engaged on the anniversary of the day they met their other half.

Sandy Moretta, the director at UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, said of the findings: "Two of the reasons the Christmas season is so magical is due to romance and family, two elements which proposals combine so perfectly.

"So planning a proposal in the winter months makes a lot of sense."

Confetti.co.uk’s editor, Anyonita Green, added: "Christmas is naturally a magical time of year. Add in the romance of a wedding proposal and you’ve set the scene for fond memories.

"Christmas proposals are especially unique because they lend themselves to so many interesting ideas. Our favourite is slipping the engagement ring inside a homemade Christmas cracker."
