Former Eggheads star CJ De Mooi has said he has been living with AIDS for the last three decades, in a post shared on his official Twitter account.
Speaking to his fans on Easter Sunday, CJ wrote: “I’ve been living with AIDS for 30 years but the agony of the last 3 years means I may not have many left. I’m outwardly healthy, still running and am staying positive I can get better.”
He added: “Thank you all for your love and if I can do anything to help any of you, please just ask.”
CJ is a patron of the HIV charity The Crescent, and has repeatedly spoken out about the issue on Twitter, and wrote a blog about his own experiences of the disease in 2013.
However, this is the first time he’s ever made reference to his own diagnosis.
HuffPost UK has contacted representatives for CJ for further information.
A Gofundme page was recently set up to help CJ by his friend, who wrote that the quizzer is “bankrupt, extremely ill and in imminent danger of losing his house”.
At the time of writing, close to £4000 had been raised by his fans, though on Monday morning, CJ urged those who wanted to support him to instead donate to the victims of the recent terror attack in Sri Lanka instead.
He wrote: “Thank you all for the support but if you were donating to my page today, please give to the victims of the Sri Lanka attacks instead.”
CJ is best known as a former panellist on the BBC quiz show Eggheads, a role he held for more than a decade, until he parted ways with the show in 2016.
While at the time he said he had quit to pursue his career in acting, it has since been reported that he was dropped from Eggheads after he was accused of sexual battery, allegations for which he was later cleared.
