The Climate Change Protest Outside Jeremy Corbyn's House Ends In The Most British Way Imaginable

"I feel really sorry and sad and guilty."

Climate change activists who glued themselves to the garden fence of Jeremy Corbyn’s home in north London have ended their demonstration peacefully and in classic British fashion – with an apology.

The four Extinction Rebellion activists said they were trying to get the Labour leader to commit to tackling climate change.

The small-scale protest was part of wider demonstrations that have brought central London to a standstill.

The activists said they are “all Jeremy Corbyn supporters” but wanted his party to go further by declaring a “climate emergency”.

Corbyn, a vegetarian, has spent much of his 30-plus year career in politics championing issues including environmentalism and nuclear disarmament. His favourite song is John Lennon’s Imagine.

One of the protesters chained herself to the leader of the Opposition’s garden fence with a bike lock.

Corbyn himself left his Islington home without speaking to the activists.

Earlier, easter eggs and flowers from the protesters, which had been taken Corbyn’s home earlier, were returned to the street by the Labour leader’s wife, Laura Alvarez.

When asked why they left, Tracee Williams, 55, told the Press Association: “I don’t think this was a misstep but whether we’d do it again, I’m not so sure.

“We just really felt we had to bring it to his front door. I feel absolutely terrible about upsetting his wife.”

Earlier, Skeena Rathor, a Labour district councillor for Stroud, said: “I feel really sorry and sad and guilty.”

They said they have had conversations with Corbyn’s staff about a potential meeting next week.
