Chris Martin's first acoustic guitar, which he used during the recording of Coldplay's debut album, is expected to sell for thousands of pounds at auction today.

The guitar, which he bought in Devon and took with him to university in London where the band got together, goes under the hammer at Bonhams in central London.

It is estimated to fetch around £9,000.

Also up for sale are a pair of album cover artworks valued at around £3,000 each and two guitars that belong to Eric Clapton, which are expected to fetch between £4,000 and £7,000.

The other lots offered for sale include a rare stereo pressing of The Beatles' 1963 album Please Please Me, which could fetch £8,000.

Natalie Downing, Bonhams entertainment memorabilia specialist, said: ''Musical instruments regularly produce excellent prices at Bonhams, so with many featured in the sale, it's a great opportunity for collectors and fans to take home items that their musical heroes may once have played.''
