English athletes are ready to face booing and heckling by Scottish fans during the Commonwealth Games, as two the countries compete for glory in Glasgow.

Unlike at the Olympics, British athletes do not enjoy the combined power of Team GB and each of the home nations of the UK will compete separately.

The timing is unfortunate, with the games starting next Wednesday, just weeks before the referendum on whether Scotland should leave the UK.

Some members of Team England have already raised the prospect of being booed and have been told to ignore it, a source told the Daily Mail.

A spokesman for the team told the paper: "If it happens, I’m sure the athletes will all just carry on. Some sports are more adversarial than others.

"We were all at Hampden Park for the Glasgow Grand Prix athletics meeting at the weekend and the welcome could not have been better.

"Going on the evidence of the Hampden Park meeting, the Scottish athletes will get the biggest cheer, followed by the other home nations athletes and then the athletes from other countries."

Games organisers have also insisted Team England would get a warm welcome.

“Glasgow and Scotland is already delivering a warm welcome to Commonwealth athletes from all the nations and territories," a Glasgow 2014 spokesman told The Daily Record.

"While friendly rivalries will exist between athletes on the field of play, we look forward to Scottish crowds expressing their passion for world-class sport in a family-friendly atmosphere.”
