This is what is looks like when the world's largest in-service container ship, the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller sails through the Suez Canal.

Terrifying.

The canal, which opened in 1869, is the oldest man-made canal in the world and is too thin to allow ships to pass alongside each other. Instead crossings are staggered, with two northbound and one southbound crossing a day, taking roughly 12 hours each.

The first passage of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller - the longest ship in the world at almost 400m and a capacity of 18,270 TEU containers - was a special occasion, marked with both healthy lashings of terror, as well as cake.

“We received a cake from the Chairman which we had on the bridge after lunch,” wrote the captains. “A very good cake indeed.”
