When a soap recruits a new producer, it’s usually the show’s most recent additions who should be nervous about the axe, but long-serving ‘Coronation Street’ star Helen Worth has admitted it’s something she’s worried about too.
Helen has played Gail Platt (née Potter, previously Tilsley, Hillman… and the rest) for more than 40 years, making her one of the cast members with the most experience on the cobbles under her belt.
However, with new producer Kate Oates now arriving on the scene, Helen has revealed that she isn’t complacent, and is just as worried about her place on the street as anyone else on the cast.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Helen revealed: “You do get nervous. It's new beginnings. You're in their hands.
She also said she hopes that ‘Corrie’ continues to represent characters from all age groups, adding: “In real life there are older people. So they have to be represented on the show. In fact, they’re a very important part of our programme.”
Helen probably doesn't have anything to worry about, with reports claiming Kate Oates is more keen to bring some old faces from years gone by back to 'Corrie', rather than axing its current stars.
Although Gail has since become a comedy figure among ‘Corrie’ fans (younger viewers probably know her better for getting married a hundred times and ordering a load of olives than her dramatic moments), the character has been involved in some huge storylines over the years, including her daughter’s teenage pregnancy and the murderous deeds of her husband, Richard Hillman.
More recently, the Platt family are at the centre of another drama, with Sarah-Louise currently struggling to cope after being involved in the death of Callum Logan last year.
