The number of people who have died in UK hospitals after contracting coronavirus has risen to 15,464 – an increase of 888 over 24 hours.
The figures cover the period up to 5pm on Friday, but the true number of deaths may be significantly different. Here’s a quick primer on what all the different numbers mean and how to understand them.
Meanwhile, as of 9am on Saturday, 357,023 people have been tested for coronavirus, with 114,217 coming back positive.
A further 784 people died in England, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 13,918. Patients were aged between 26 and 100 years old with 38 of those (aged between 44 and 96 years old) having no known underlying health condition.
Fifty-six more people died in Scotland, bringing the total to 893 deaths. Health officials said that as of Friday evening, 1,793 patients were in hospital with either confirmed or suspected coronavirus, a decrease of six.
Public Health Wales has announced 28 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities in Wales to 534, and confirmation of 292 new cases.
Northern Ireland’s Public Health Agency said a further 17 people had died in the region, bringing the total to 193.
