A second person has died in the UK after contracting coronavirus, the health secretary has confirmed, as the global number of cases surpassed 100,000.

The man is believed to have died at Milton Keynes Hospital, and was described by Matt Hancock as “somebody older” with “underlying health conditions”.

Hancock told ITV: “I am very sorry to hear the news of a second death here in the UK of somebody with coronavirus.

“My condolences go out to the family and his loved ones.”

To date, 163 people have tested positive for the virus in the UK and two people have died.

There is currently no vaccine available to protect people against Covid-19, but Johnson said he hoped one will be ready in about a year.

News of the funding comes after health secretary Matt Hancock warned Brits against stockpiling food, saying the government was in talks with supermarkets to ensure that those in self-isolation would be able to get the supplies they need.

Globally, more than 100,000 people have now been diagnosed with coronavirus, with more than 80,500 of these cases recorded in China. To date, around 3,400 people have died during the outbreak.
