Hundreds of people have turned out to catch a glimpse of the stars from the new Dad's Army movie as a big, set-piece scene was filmed in a seaside town.

The movie's production team has spent days transforming the Old Town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire, into the fictional Walmington-on-Sea in the 1940s.

Today, cast members including Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Sir Tom Courteney and Sir Michael Gambon joined more than 300 extras to create a St George's Day parade in the High Street.

The new film, directed by Oliver Parker, will feature the much-loved Home Guard characters along with a new addition - a journalist, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is sent to write about the men's exploits.

Pompous bank manager Captain Mainwaring is being played by Jones, while Nighy takes the part of his second-in-command, Sergeant Wilson.

Sir Tom stars as Corporal Jones, Sir Michael as Godfrey, Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison is Private Pike and Danny Mays takes the part of the spiv, Walker.

There are also roles for Sarah Lancashire, Alison Steadman, Mark Gatiss and Annette Crosbie.

Filming started last month and the cast have been spotted at various locations on the Yorkshire coast over the last few weeks.

The much-loved original TV show ran from 1968 to 1977, attracting 18 million viewers at its height, and the original cast made a film version in 1971.

Some two million people still tune in for repeats of the original show, which was the creation of Jimmy Perry and David Croft.
