Dads are to be urged to become move involved in their partner's antenatal and postnatal care.

Guidance from the Royal College of Midwives and the Department of Health will suggest that fathers sleep overnight on maternity wards to help with their newborns. Greater emphasis will be put on dads attending antenatal appointments such as scans and midwife visits with their wife or partner.

The Telegraph reports that "antenatal and parenting classes should be arranged around men's work and sporting commitments" and that maternity wards and units will be encouraged to provide men's lifestyle magazines to help new dads feel more at ease.

The guidance was drawn up after research by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) and Department of Health, found that dads are often the 'invisible parent' in a newborn's life.

What do you think of these proposals?

Would you have wanted your partner being around all the time you were in hospital?

Or would you want other people's partners sleeping on your ward?

Is it a teeny bit patronising to think men would prefer football to baby?
