Dame Barbara Windsor has been laid to rest following a small funeral ceremony in London.

The showbiz legend died last month at the age of 83, six years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only a small selection of guests were allowed to attend the service at Golders Green Crematorium in London.

This included her close friends Jane Moore and Christopher Biggins, who delivered a eulogy, as well as former co-stars Dean Gaffney, Ross Kemp and Jamie Borthwick.

Dame Barbara’s husband of 20 years Scott Mitchell led the funeral procession, with her hearse adorned with flowers spelling out Babs, The Dame and Saucy.

Her former EastEnders co-stars Ross Kemp and Anna Karen, who played her on-screen son Grant and sister Aunt Sal, also gave eulogies alongside Biggins.

Although she is best known for her roles in the Carry On films and her portrayal of Queen Vic Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, Dame Barbara and Scott devoted her final years to raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2019, she met with prime minister Boris Johnson at Downing Street to discuss dementia care in the UK.

Following her death, a fundraiser to help the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK in Dame Barbara’s name has reached almost £150,000 in donations.

Scott has said of the fundraiser: “This outpouring of support has filled me with pride and been a huge comfort to me. It just shows how loved, respected and adored my Barbara was. That’s magical.”
