Who would have thought Arsenal would sign a top quality 23-year-old English striker on Transfer Deadline Day? Not me and let's be honest not you either.
There has been mixed reaction from the fans about Arsenal's decision to sign Danny Welbeck from Manchester United and I can see why. Welbeck has not got the best scoring stats and at times can be ineffective in matches .
The pundits or as some call them"footballing gurus" (not that I think they are anything of the sort) have praised Arsene Wenger for managing to get Welbeck to put pen to paper.
Welbeck has scored just 29 goals in 142 appearances for Man Utd. However, it is important to remember that the majority of these games included short substitution appearances and playing out wide on the flanks.
Welbeck has shown he has that natural instinct for goal when played through the middle as seen for England and the little opportunities he received at Old Trafford.
So how does he fit into this current Arsenal side?
Current players and football pundits believe that Welbeck will thrive at Arsenal and reach his full potential.
The club always comes before the player so it's about what Welbeck can do for Arsenal as much as it is about what Arsenal can do for Welbeck.
Welbeck has great pace which Giroud and Sanogo lack. It can be very frustrating for us Arsenal fans when the likes of Carzola or Ozil dink a ball over the top, but our striker doesn't have the legs to get on to the end of it.
The former Man Utd striker also brings his height and strength. Giroud has those qualities and is probably better than Welbeck when it comes to aerial duels, but with the Frenchman out until the New Year Welbeck's services are most definitely required.
If you're going to be a successful striker at Arsenal you need to have good link up play, just look at likes of Henry, Bergkamp and Ian Wright. Arsenal's midfield is very creative with the likes of Ramsey running on beyond the striker and helping the target man out. Welbeck is great at bringing others in to the game and again has the pace to keep up with play and make a contribution.
You can't help but notice Welbeck's defensive contributions. I'm sure Arsene did not sign him because of his defensive capabilities, but it was probably a contributing factor. Arsenal can sometimes be slow to react and struggle with breaking up play and although Giroud does put a shift in, he just doesn't have the pace to recover from them positions and get himself into the box.
One striker no one has talked about in recent days is our very own World Cup winner Lukas Podolski. His hammer of a left foot will play a pivotal role in how this season shapes out especially with Giroud's injury and Sanago's incapability to influence games.
Man Utd's decision to sell Welbeck is still rather bemusing. Welbeck had been at the club since he was just 8-years-old! For Man Utd to sell him and secure loan deal for a 29-year-old striker who is well past his best says a lot about the clubs new identity.
Welbeck will get goals for Arsenal and it won't take him very long to find his shooting boots. £16 million what a bargain! Exciting times for Arsenal fans, if Arsenal are in a similar position to where they were last season come January and they actually decide to buy that strong holding midfielder everyone has been talking about then the title challenge is well and truly on.
