David Cameron has joined Theresa May to campaign for the Conservatives in the by-election triggered by the former prime minister's resignation.

Mr Cameron resigned as an MP last month, saying he did not want to be a "distraction" for the new Prime Minister and stressing he had his "own views" on certain issues.

His comments sparked speculation that he quit over Mrs May's plans to approve a wave of new grammar schools, an idea he opposed as PM.

Mr Cameron denied the issue was linked and today joined the Prime Minister to campaign for Tory candidate Robert Courts ahead of the by-election on Thursday.

Jeremy Corbyn also travelled to the constituency to lend his support to Labour candidate Duncan Enright, who lost to Mr Cameron in 2015 by more than 25,000 votes.

Also in the race for the Green Party is Larry Sanders, the brother of Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully challenged Hillary Clinton to become the Democrats' candidate for the US presidential election.

The Liberal Democrats are represented by businesswoman Liz Leffman and Ukip by Dickie Bird.
