David Moyes will replace Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager, after the Scot announced his retirement today.

With Ferguson lingering at Old Trafford as a director and ambassador, it is regarded as an assistance, rather than a hindrance, for his apprentice.

Odds on Moyes succeeding Ferguson were slashed by bookmakers at the weekend and the Scot is now set to end 11 years as Everton manager to take on the role of a lifetime.

Moyes has not won a single trophy in his career and although Everton finished fourth in the 2004-05 Barclays Premier League season they were beaten in the Champions League play-off by Villarreal.

Fifty-year-old Moyes has experience in the Europa League, however his outstanding achievement was guiding Everton to a first FA Cup final in 14 years in 2009.

The Toffees beat United on penalties in the semi-final, albeit a United side boasting numerous second-string players as Ferguson prioritised an 18th title win.

The Times say Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will join Moyes' coaching staff.
