Police have seized a drone which was being flown over the home of the Wimbledon tennis tournament.

Scotland Yard said officers were alerted to a man flying a drone over the All England Lawn Tennis Club in south west London from a nearby golf course at 8.37am today.

Officers from Merton police are investigating.

Inspector Roger Robinson of Merton police said: "It is an offence to fly a drone within 50 metres of a structure. Anyone intending to fly a drone should give prior consideration to the surrounding landscape and any structures or venues.

"While it is not our intention to prevent people from enjoying the use of drones, it is important that regulations are adhered to. Police will take positive action against anyone committing an offence."

Britain's top tennis star Andy Murray begins his bid to reclaim the Wimbledon crown next week. The 2013 champion will be hoping to land another SW19 title when the tournament swings into action after crashing out in the quarter-finals last year.
