Prince William left his pregnant wife Kate's bedside at London's King Edward VII hospital in Marylebone last night, saying nothing to the waiting press and looking sombre in a grey sweater and blue shirt. He was driven back to Kensington Palace.
The palace has today announced that the Duchess needs 'rest' and is likely to spend 'several' more days in hospital because of severe morning sickness. She is thought to be on a drip to keep her hydrated and to boost her nutritional intake.
As Prince William left for home last night it was reported that prior to Kate's hospitalisation, the couple had yet to share their happy news with the Queen, and had only just told Catherine's family on the weekend that she fell ill.
It's thought that the royal couple was planning to make a joyous announcement during the Christmas break at Sandringham, but were left with 'no choice' but to reveal all after Kate's admittance to hospital. She is thought to be under 12 weeks pregnant, the usual time women announce the news to friends and family. Prince Charles and the Queen were then told just an hour before the news was made public.

The Duchess was last seen in public on Friday, as she played an impromptu game of hockey in high-heeled knee length boots and a green tartan dress coat at her old prep school, St Andrews in Pangbourne, Berkshire.
William is expected to return to Catherine's bedside today.
