Chart-topping singer Ed Sheeran brought some star power as he kicked off his first Wembley Stadium show, joined by Sir Elton John.

Sir Elton, who previously performed with Sheeran at the Grammy Awards, was a surprise guest on the opening night of the younger star's hat-trick of gigs at the venue.

The pair duetted on Sir Elton's Don't Go Breaking My Heart, with the Rocket Man himself playing the piano.

"When I asked Elton to play a song, he said we should play one of mine but I said we should play one of his instead," Sheeran said.

The Thinking Out Loud singer is the first artist to perform at the stadium without the accompaniment of a band as he plays three sold-out gigs this weekend.

The concerts coincide with his return to top spot in the new Friday charts with his second album x for the fourth time.

The 24-year-old Brit winner promised to keep the 90,000-strong crowd entertained, saying: "I'm going to entertain you for the next two hours.

"We will all lose our voices. The whole ethos of gigs is, as long as it doesn't harm anyone, you can do anything you want."

Armed with only a guitar and a loop station, Sheeran performed songs from his first album + and its follow-up x, the biggest selling and fastest selling album of 2014, including number one hit Thinking Out Loud, as well as Don't, Lego House, The A Team and I See Fire - which featured on the soundtrack of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

"Wembley never seemed my dream because it was too big to dream about. Now that we are here it's a bit mental," he said.

He closed the show, which was being filmed for a live DVD, with Sing.

Sheeran will also play the stadium tonight and Sunday.
