Emma Watson Protests Against The 'Women Should Not Laugh Loudly In Public' Claim

After the Turkish deputy prime minister gave a speech urging women to follow a strict moral code of not laughing out loud in public last week, Emma Watson (UN Women's Goodwill ambassador) made her own personal protest via Twitter.

The 24-year-old British actress shared what looks like an old holiday photo of herself in skinny jeans and an oversized jumper laughing in public.

There's no caption, but Watson mentions Phumzile Mlambo executive director of UN Women and her senior adviser Elizabeth Nyamayaro.

During his speech, Bülent Arinc said: "A man should be moral but women should be moral as well, they should know what is decent and what is not decent.

"She should not laugh loudly in front of all the world and should preserve her decency at all times."

So far, so outrageous. And, as you'd imagine, Arinc's demands were widely ridiculed on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter with women uploading pictures of themselves laughing.

This is exactly the kind of attitude that UN Women, aka the United Nations organisation dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, aim to stomp out.

Watson's stance was clear, and it was her lead that thousands followed using the hashtag #direnkahkaha (resist laughter) and #direnkadin (resist women) on Twitter worldwide.
