England and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry has been ruled out of this summer’s European Championship, with Phil Jagielka replacing him.
Barry sustained an injury in Saturday's 1-0 friendly defeat of Norway in Oslo, and a scan on Monday confirmed he has torn a muscle in his lower abdomen.
His replacement, Everton defender Jagielka, meanwhile has not played in midfield regularly since he was at Sheffield United in 2007.
England manager Roy Hodgson said on the Football Association's website: “I’m very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years.
"I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery."

Barry has won 53 caps for the Three Lions since he made his debut against Ukraine prior to Euro 2000 12 years ago.
He started all four of England's games at the 2010 World Cup, as Fabio Capello's side crashed out of the South Africa finals in Bloemfontein against Germany.
Jagielka is a curious call-up since he has primarily played as a centre-back for Everton since transferring to Goodison Park from Sheffield United in 2007.
His promotion could see Phil Jones used as an auxiliary midfielder should Hodgson require him to offer Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard energy in midfield.
The 29-year-old has won just 11 England caps in his career, and his ascension is hardly a vote of confidence in Liverpool's Jordan Henderson, who was the outstanding midfielder on the standby list.
