Escape the 'Quit And Start Over' Cycle Now

We've all been there. You start with good intentions, get sidetracked, then give up. But it's all good because you intend to start fresh on Monday, right? If you really want to achieve your goals then it's time you quit starting over.

All of us have different fitness and health goals but the majority of us struggle with sticking to them. You know what I'm talking about - you're doing great, working out regularly, eating to support your goals, then you have a small slip up and use that as an excuse to quit for the week. Before you even realise what you're doing, you're eating junk food every day and you're making promises to yourself to start fresh next week.

We've all been there. You start with good intentions, get sidetracked, then give up. But it's all good because you intend to start fresh on Monday, right?

If you really want to achieve your goals then it's time you quit starting over.

I highly doubt anybody can honestly say that on the route to their goals, they have never slipped up. It's perfectly normal to struggle - if it was easy then everyone would look like a fitness model! What takes you from where you are right now to achieving your goals is how you deal with the setbacks.

I know the usual way most people deal with any setbacks is to accept the attitude of 'In for a penny, in for a pound'. For those of you who aren't familiar with that phrase it basically means that once you've had one slice of cake you may as well make it worth it and eat the whole damn cake.

Whether it's missing the gym for a day or two, or eating something you know will hinder your fitness goals, the typical logic is to start again on Monday.

If you scrap that approach you're far more likely to achieve your goals.

I want my body to be healthy as well as in shape so consume mostly clean foods. I eat an 80-90% clean diet with occasional treats, but the most important part about my diet is that I don't eat a chocolate bar then give up and eat everything in sight. I find that allowing myself treats means I'm far less likely to gorge one day.

Allow yourself treats occasionally, but if you're going to reach your goals, then you need to be able to know when to stop - although I admit I've found that difficult at times too!

This way you won't see it as slipping up because you'll be including occasional treats in your diet (and by diet I mean general diet - the way you eat - not some crazy fad diet).

If you do end up eating something you hadn't planned to, don't quit. Don't undo all of your hard work, telling yourself you ruined it so you may as well eat everything in sight or skip the gym until next week. Instead, accept what you've eaten and get straight back into eating to support your goals.

Accept that you will stray from the path to achieving your goals at times. It's not a terrible thing, it's pretty much inevitable. Just change the way you deal with it.

Get rid of that whole 'I'll start again on Monday' mentality, and replace it with an understanding and acceptance that the path to your goals will be riddled with obstacles but if you handle them well then you'll get there.

Quit starting over. You can do it.
