Euro 2012: Ireland Set For Spain Showdown As Memories Of 2002 World Cup Return (VIDEO)

WATCH: Ireland V Spain 2002 World Cup

Spain and Republic of Ireland's Gdansk meeting at Euro 2012 will fuel memories of the nations' encounter 10 years ago when they met in Suwon at the 2002 World Cup.

With the build-up to the tournament dominated by Roy Keane and his subsequent warm-up, Mick McCarthy's Ireland had progressed from Group E via draws against Cameroon and Germany as well as a 3-0 win versus Saudi Arabia.

Spain meanwhile had recorded nine points from nine and scored three goals in each of their games against Slovenia, Paraguay and South Africa. But the Republic, relaxed in the aftermath of Keane's departure, had turned to another Keane as their hero - Robbie.

His last minute equaliser against Germany in the second group match was followed up with a strike against the Saudis before another stoppage-time leveller against the Spanish in their round-of-16 clash.

Fernando Morientes' eighth minute lead may have been an ominous signal, but it had the opposite effect. Ireland dominated the Spaniards in normal time and the 30 minutes of extra-time. And so it came down to penalties...
