Scientists have created an implant that delivers a golden tan without the risk of sun exposure. The implant is no bigger than more familiar contraceptive implants, and can deliver a natural tan for up to three months.
The implant works by stimulating the body's natural production of melanin, the skin pigment that gives all shades of skin their colour.
The drug Scenesse which was designed by Australian scientists to treat vitiligo sufferers and transplant patients susceptible to UV exposure among others, was designed to increase melanin which protects the skin from skin cancer.
Millions of Britons use sunbeds each year, despite the practice heightening the risk of skin cancer. The inserts could be a safe alternative for tan fans, although they are not yet endorsed by Cancer Research UK.
