A North Indian farmer, who was killed whilst working in sugarcane fields, is one of seven victims of tiger attacks in India in the last two weeks.

Villagers have been forced to hole up whilst forest rangers and local officials try and locate the hungry tigress who is still at large in the Moradabad district of the Uttar Pradesh region.

Rupak De, the principal chief conservator of forests said its latest victim was a woman whose body was found in a forest in Uttar Pradesh state on Tuesday 14 January.

Government official, Salim Luqmaan, said: “People are terrified.

"They have been asked not to go near forest areas alone. Three hunters have been hired to kill the tigress."

A 65-year-old man was mauled in neighbouring Sambhal district on 29 December 2013, sparking reports that a killer tiger was on the loose.

Member of Parliament and wildlife activist, Meneka Gandhi, has written to forest officials and asked that the tiger’s life be spared.

She states the animal is only attacking people because it’s hungry and would spare humans once it returns to its natural habitat.

The MP is requesting the government capture the tiger and release it in the neighbouring state of Uttarakhand.
