Indian police have reportedly arrested a man on suspicion of attempting to bury his nine-year-old daughter alive.

She was pulled from the earth by locals who “thrashed” her father and notified the police. He has been charged with attempted murder.
The girl is in hospital in a serious condition, the Times of India writes.
Sources told Indian news channel NDTV the man’s “dislike for the girl child” prompted him to carry out the act.

It reports he had buried the girl up to her chest when his wife returned home. Hussain is then alleged to have placed a bamboo basket over her head in an attempt to conceal what he was doing.
Police officer Amal Chakraborty said: “Abdul Hussein was roughed up by the people who rescued the girl from a half-buried condition. Considering his weak physical condition, the court sent him to Judicial Custody for four days reserving directive on our plea for police-remand.”
