A Conservative member of the House of Lords has encouraged the United States to lift its ban on haggis imports in order to make Americans less fat.

Haggis imports have been banned in the US since 1971. Lord McColl of Dulwich told the Lords today that the traditional Scottish haggis "satisfies hunger very much more than the junk food the Americans consume".

McColl said eating haggis would help "to deal with the greatest epidemic they have, the obesity epidemic, which is killing millions and costing millions and the cure is free".

However Labour's Lord Winston, the well known doctor, said perhaps the UK government should pay attention to overweight people closer to home. "If it does indeed deal with obesity maybe we should be promoting it in Glasgow," he said.
